Toussaint Louverture's Diplomacy

Abstract: The article covers Louverture’s convoluted and highly effective diplomacy with France, England, the U.S., Jamaica, and Cuba in 1798-1801. The period showed Louverture as more of a traditional statesman in the European tradition than as an idealistic slave rebel. In particular, he made no effort to export the slave revolt overseas—and even prevented this from happening.
